That's exactly true, just gotta keep practicing. I think what you might find useful is try to add some more shadows and depth to the picture by making the shadows darker and making the highlights lighter so that the surfaces, for example the skin, don't end up looking flat. I think what you've done with the smooth background is nice, it reminds me of a photograph zooming in, but a few details here and there could have made the background more lively. You may also consider cropping the picture differently - for instance I think it looks a lot nicer as a square, like in your profile picture.

Overall though, I like the details of her clothes and the hair looks really nice, the colors fit well together and really the next step you should most likely take is better shading.
